Cool Roof Suitability Self-Assessment

The Cool Roof Suitability Tool (found here) serves as a first step in evaluating the potential of a cool roof for your building. As a next step, this Self-Assessment provides further assistance to building owners and managers to make informed decisions about cool roofs. Through a series of Yes/No questions, the Self-Assessment provides important considerations and guidance to help evaluate your roof, building, and neighborhood block and determine if a cool roof is both feasible and beneficial for your property.

What is a cool roof?
Cool roofs (also known as white roofs or reflective roofs) are simply roofs designed to reflect more sunlight than a conventional roof. By reflecting more sunlight, the roofs absorb less heat, keeping the building and surrounding area cooler.

The Cool Roof Suitability Tool identifies a roof as potentially suitable for a cool roof if it is both dark-colored and low-sloped (flat) roof. While these two factors are the ideal condition for a cool roof coating (reflective), the potential suitability of a cool roof is more nuanced. For instance, low-sloped roofs allow for easier installation of cool roofing materials, but there are also effective options available for high-sloped roofs. Take the Self-Assessment to learn more about how a cool roof could benefit your building.
